Not just myths and legends

Greece holidays are a great choice for families wanting to enjoy fantastic beaches, exciting attractions and ancient history. There are many Greek islands and resort within the mainland to choose from when booking Greece holidays, however one of the most popular is Crete.

Crete is home to many of the ancient sites and monuments that many people associate with Greece. Visit the ancient ruins of the Minoan civilization in Knossos, the nearby Archaeological Museum of Heraklion offers an insight into this fascinating ancient culture. The Lasithi Plateau is an area of fields and roads that stretch along the perimeter of the nearby mountain range. Within the mountains there is an opportunity to visit the mythical Cave of Zeus, according to Greek mythology; this was where Zeus was hidden as a child from his father.

Another historical landmark to explore during Greece holidays is the Zakros Gorge which is located just South of Sitea. The gorge is also known as the ‘valley of the dead’ and runs for several kilometres, within the walls of the gorge lay ancient Neolithic tombs. The Zakros Gorge is not as steep as others, making it ideal for families or older travellers that wish to explore in comfort.

The variety of ancient ruins and monuments are just one of the many reasons that people flock to the country to enjoy Greece holidays. The rich and varied ancient past has attracted million of tourists every year; however Greece also offers a wide range of modern facilities that are ideal for younger travellers.
